Angie, I am the twin sister of Terry who has already succesfully recounted our tale of having the maze surgery completed in January. The answer of whether to have open heart surgery because you have atrial fibrillation simply comes down to what is in your own heart (please excuse the pun).Once you have the facts it is a little scary but no one else can make the decision for you-not even your cardiologist at home. Mine told me that the maze surgery was nothing for me to consider-that it did not work. I am glad Terry continued to do some research on her own and found Dr. McCarthy at the Cleveland Clinic. Personally, even though I had some complications with the fluid build-up and problems with my stitches, I would still make the same decision about having the Maze. I feel pretty good now-just need to build up my strength and endurance. I look forward to May when I will go off the medication. Good luck, Angie. May God be with you. Sherry
